
2023 July EPI Intensive Training
Welcome to the 2023 July EPI Intensive Training!
This virtual course includes four days of live virtual training via Zoom as well as online modules. Please review all the following information carefully to make sure you maximize your learning and earn the certificate of completion at the end.
To earn the EPI Intensive Certificate you must do all of the following:
- Complete the 4-day live virtual training and post-event evaluation - attendance is mandatory for this training
- Complete 5 online EPI modules, and achieve 100% on the related knowledge checks (you have unlimited attempts) to support learning:(* = If at all possible, we recommend you complete these modules prior to the in-person training.)
- Using and Reporting Data
- Regulations and Requirements
- NHSN Basics*
- Basic Epidemiology *
- Microbiology 101*
- Review the flash cards in the Digital Resources for this course.
- Score an 80% or higher on the final knowledge review and assessment for the program. You will have unlimited attempts to complete it. Each question comes with a rationale to support your learning. NOTE: for Fill-in-the-blank questions, be as simple as possible with your response. For example, if the question is asking for a numerical value, only provide the number, no accompanying text. You will be marked wrong if you provide more than you need to.
- Complete the Post-Course Survey Evaluation for the overall certificate of completion.
APIC’s Learning Management System will track your progress. Once you have completed all of these items, you will be able to download your certificate under the Content tab within the “Post-Course Survey and Certificates” section.
Important notes:
- To earn the certificates of completion, you have up to three months after the 4-day live virtual training to complete all the requirements above.
- Make sure to take advantage of the Digital Resource for this program! It includes the learning objectives, an extensive collection of flash cards for you to test your knowledge and learn the content, and resources for further learning.
- Contact hours: If, for any reason you only complete the live virtual 4-day training, you can earn contact hours for that only (28 hours). If you complete all program requirements and earn the EPI Intensive Certificate, you will earn a total of 34 contact hours. Once you have earned your contact hours, they can be found under the Content tab above under the “Post-Course Survey and Certificates” section.
- Please find PDF copies of all Workbooks per day for this program above under the "Agenda" and "Workbooks" tabs. APIC does not provide photocopies of the PowerPoints.

Technical Issues
Please try the steps below to troubleshoot if your online course work does not load or if you receive an error message:
- We recommend you use Google Chrome as your web browser.
- Make sure your browser is up to date by clicking the ellipsis (top right corner in your Chrome browser) then click Help and About Google Chrome. The browser will automatically update.
- Clear the cache and cookies in your browser.
- Use a private network (ex: home) as opposed to a public network (ex: work, school). Many facilities have pop-up blockers and firewalls turned on to prevent content from loading. You may need to contact your IT department to troubleshoot.

Janet Riese worked in the infection control field for over 20 years. She served as the Officer of Infection Control/Prevention at the Mary Lanning Healthcare system for 20+years. Since then, she served as a till in for the current IP/EH programs there, assists with audits and med refills in the clinics at MLH, and is a District Representative for the Nebraska Infection Control Network - District V.Janet is also a consultant for APIC. She is a faculty member also for APIC and has taught the EPI and ASC Intensives, LTC, and IC Basics courses. Janet, also, is a reviewer and editor for courses. She has also participated in writing LTC test questions and revising questions for the CIC study course. Janet also consults with CAH and LTCs in Nebraska. She has provides mentoring to new IPs/EH nurses in Nebraska. |
Prinu Gabriel, MS, ASCP (SM), CIC
Director for Infection Prevention

Prinu Gabriel has a Master’s Degree in Science specializing in Molecular Biology and a post grad diploma in Medical Microbiology. She has worked as a Clinical Microbiologist for about 10 years and then transitioned to Infection Prevention in 2010. She currently works as Director for Infection Prevention for an acute care hospital. She has certifications as specialist in microbiology (SM) from ASCP and certification in infection control (CIC). She also has teaching experience as an Adjunct Professor for Indian River Community College, FL teaching Life Science and Microbiology.Prinu is active APIC member and serves in several committees within her hospital like the Hospital Quality and Patient Safety, Environment of Care, Hospital System Infection Prevention Cabinet etc.: She chairs the Tarrant County Infectious Disease Council along in Tarrant County, Texas. She serves as a strong advocate for evidence-based practices. She is a strong believer of communication and enjoys teaching. She partners with the education department and help with various training within her hospital system with new processes, new product usage, Infection Prevention education for RNs, PCTs, OR personnel etc. Infection Prevention is an evolving and dynamic field and she continues to learn and grow. |
