New construction and renovation are a constant in healthcare and present risks related to infections that can be transmitted during these activities. Despite published evidence of these infections, gaps in communication and planning continue and infections related to construction activity remain an avoidable risk. Health care regulators have set expectations for safety and look for evidence of compliance during inspections. Infection Preventionists should be aware of construction and maintenance-related infection risks and best practices for mitigation.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the importance of involving infection control prior to the start of the project
  • Explain the importance of conducting an Infection Control Risk assessment (ICRA) for every project
  • Identify risks during construction and renovation (air quality, dust, and mold)
  • Identify control measures to reduce risks associated with construction
  • Identify resources related to healthcare design, construction, and maintenance to guide the IP in supporting best practices to prevent infection
