Infection Preventionist

Steven J. Schweon RN, MPH, MSN, CIC, CPHQ, FSHEA, FAPIC is a seasoned, board certified Infection Preventionist. He first became interested with infectious diseases while serving as an Army medic in South Korea, where he supervised a microbiology department that specialized in sexually transmitted diseases. He later worked on the high technology isolation ward at Ft. Detrick, Maryland, home of “The Hot Zone.” Prior to becoming an infection preventionist, he had 14 years of experience, and achieved certification, in critical care and behavioral health nursing. Steve was also a long-term care “orderly” prior to attending nursing school.

 

Steve has been an infection preventionist since 1995, achieving continual board infection control certification since 1997. Clinical experiences include the acute care and Long-Term Care settings.

Pamela S. Falk, MPH, CIC, FSHEA, FAPIC

Epidemiologist

Northside Hospitals and Clinics

Pam Falk is an infection prevention leader with 40+ years of Infection Prevention and Epidemiology experience ranging from Academic Medical, Large, and Multi-Hospital oversight. She holds a Master of Public Health in Hospital Epidemiology from the University of Michigan and is CIC certified in Infection Control. She is a Fellow of APIC and SHEA. She is currently an active member of APICs national Emerging Infectious Diseases Task Force. Pam represented APIC at the video shooting of donning and doffing PPE in response to Ebola at Johns Hopkins University, a collaborative project with CDC. As an APIC Consultant, she also trained donning and doffing PPE and hospital emergency preparedness in response to Ebola in several cities across the United States. She is currently an active member of APICs national Emerging Infectious Diseases Task Force. She has presented nationally and authored many articles, papers, and abstracts. 

Kelsey P. Ostergren, MPH, CIC (Moderator)

Director of Health Policy Initiatives

Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA)

Kelsey P. Ostergren, MPH, CIC currently serves as the Director of Health Policy initiatives for the Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA).

In this role, she provides oversight of all infection prevention activities for the association and serves as the lead for all infection prevention, infectious disease, and emerging pathogen activity for more than 180 members across the state.

During her 9-year tenure with the MHA, Kelsey has lead work within the sectors of healthcare quality improvement, adult education, data collection and analytics, contract management, grant applications, and has been responsible for oversight and analysis of National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) data.

Ms. Ostergren utilizes these experiences, coupled with her public health training and certification in infection control, to guide policies at the state and federal level that impact daily operations of healthcare facilities and the clinicians they employ. She is passionate about utilizing best practices in adult education to spread clinically sound, effective, just in time training to improve healthcare delivery and patient experience.

Kelsey currently holds a seat on the executive board of the APIC Great Lakes Chapter (Michigan), and is a member of numerous National APIC Committees, including Education Committee & Emerging Infectious Disease Taskforce.

Peggy Douglas, MPH, RRT, CIC

acute care hospital infection preventionist

Seattle, Washington

Peggy Douglas is an acute care hospital infection preventionist in Seattle, Washington with over 8 years’ experience in hospital epidemiology, infection prevention, and public health HAI epidemiology. In addition to acute care settings, Peggy’s infection preventionist experience includes a federally qualified health center (FQHC) and comprehensive cancer center.  Peggy has been a Respiratory Therapist for over 30 years, and her experience spans various healthcare settings, including trauma and burn medicine, cancer care, and adult, pediatric, and neonatal intensive care. In addition to being a member of APIC’s Emerging Infectious Disease taskforce, she is a mentor on the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) new epidemiologist mentorship program and a previous contributing member of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America’s (SHEA) research committee.   Peggy holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Iowa College of Public Health and is certified in infection control.
