This presentation will provide up-to-date information of clinical history and physical assessment components for identifying patients with monkeypox based on recommended guidance and will provide resources to link to care; it will utilize case studies and photographs to facilitate understanding of important history and physical assessment findings. It will also include practical information on prevention and control measures for both healthcare workers and patients. Finally, there will be discussion on strategies to reduce stigma and discrimination.

Amanda Cary is a nurse practitioner and the manager of the Sexual Health and Wellness department, at Whitman Walker Health, a non-profit community health center organization in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, which offers community-based health and wellness services with expertise in LGBTQ and HIV care. Amanda provides general primary care, gender affirming care, STI testing and treatment, as well as HIV primary care. She is an HIV Specialist credentialed through the American Academy of HIV Medicine. Amanda completed her nurse practitioner and master’s degree in public health training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD in 2017. She also completed an HIV specialty post-baccalaureate program and worked as a nurse on an inpatient HIV and infectious disease unit for 4 years at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Amanda joined Whitman Walker in 2018 to share in its commitment to HIV and LGBTQ care, to promote health justice and reduce health disparities. During a recent monkeypox outbreak, Amanda has been instrumental in leading her team in implementation of national guidance in care of patients with monkeypox disease as well as infection prevention and control measures in the healthcare setting.

Barbara Smith, RN, BSN, MPA, CIC, FAPIC

Nurse Epidemiologist

Mount Sinai St. Luke’s/ Mount Sinai West Hospitals

Barbara Smith is a nurse epidemiologist at the Mount Sinai Health Systems at the St. Luke’s and West campuses in New York City.  She has participated in multiple local and New York State collaboratives to reduce HAIs. She is the infection prevention consultant for several independent ambulatory practices including endoscopy and dialysis centers in the metropolitan region.

She served on the MRSA Advisory Board for IPRO and serves on the Infection Prevention Steering Committee of Greater New York Hospital Association. In conjunction with the GNYHA, she developed and implemented an Infection Prevention Coaches Training Program offered to acute and long term care facilities throughout the NY metropolitan area.  

Ms. Smith has served as a member of the APIC communications committee. She served as the president of the Greater New York APIC chapter in 2009 and previously as the membership chair. She has served on the chapter’s planning committee for the annual conference with primary responsibility for preparation of the continuing education application.

Barbara serves on the advisory board of Medical Reserve Corps of New York City and the American Council for St. Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo.  

Ms. Smith received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Hunter College and a Master’s of Public Administration from New York University.  She is certified in infection prevention and control.  In 2016 she earned the Fellow of APIC designation.
