The eyes contain mucosal surfaces with links to the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, and circulatory system. Multiple infectious agents can gain entry through the eye, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Eye protection is an underappreciated and often forgotten form of personal protective equipment which provides a barrier to infectious materials entering the eye. During the COVID-19 pandemic, one topic of confusion and contention was related to eye protection to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission; despite utilizing reliable physical distancing and adequate gloves, gowns, and masks for patient care encounters, front-line workers remained at increased risk of infection. Appropriate eye protection may provide added benefits to face masks in preventing the acquisition of SARS-CoV-2 and other infections. This presentation will address the confusion related to universal eye protection through an in-depth discussion of the topic and interactive scenario-based training.
